Ladies and gentlemen, it's time to relax. Its just cannabis with your super cool cannabis friend big Larry! what's poppin party people?! It's me big Larry Spann your new super cool cannabis friend here at the relax. Its just cannabis podcast. And guess what, baby? It's our first show and Man! Let me tell you it's been a journey. But we in here now it's 2022. 2022 Ladies and gentlemen. Now I don't even know what happened to 2020. somebody tell me… What happened 2021?! 2021 came in here introduced herself, grabbed a drink and bounced up out the back door. She didn't say goodbye or nothing. I didn't even get to holla at her. I had a few things I wanted to bring up to 2021 but she Gone! Its 2022 now. So…wash my hands, wipe my hands. 2021 is gone. Thank God we made it. It's 2022 The sky's the limit. I hope you and your loved ones are safe and sound. With all this madness going on everywhere. Man. Thank God for cannabis. Because the world has turned stress and anxiety up to 10! It’s through the roof these days. Folks losing their minds… goodness. But lucky for us. Cannabis is maybe the best de stressor known to man. So at least we have a little help to get through. Now, the whole world could use a fat joint. Trust me on that. You know what I'm saying? Word? Word. But like I said, it's our first show baby! And it feels so good. And we got a banger for you. An absolute banger! First and foremost. We are privileged and honored to have interviewed a highly distinguished leader of cannabis research the esteemed Dr. Daniele Piomelli, the director of the University of California Irvine Center for the Study of cannabis. Now don't ask me how we got him. It was the Grace of God that dropped him in our lap, one of the four most minds in cannabis research dropped in our lap, and we interviewed him for our very first guest on relax. Its just cannabis. I hope this is a harbinger of things to come. I hope it's a Harbinger. I hope its a sign of how well things are gonna go with this podcast. Because, you know, we’re starting off with a with a banger! Dr. Piomelli , the Director of University of California, Irvine Center for the Study of cannabis which is a world leader, as a multidisciplinary research center, whose mission is to address the medical, legal and cultural challenges posed by cannabis legalization. That's coming up in our Dr. Feelgood segment that's a little bit later. But Dr. Piomelli is awesome. And I really enjoyed interviewing him. And I learned a lot too. I think you will too. But again, like I said, that's later in our Dr. Feelgood segment. Now in our grinder segment. We got some bad news baby. I'm sorry to say. Yeah, it's pretty sad situation. But um, The stoner age? The stoner age is dead. I know it's a sad situation. Now I know if you guys know it yet, because it's been kept quiet for the most part, but sadly it's real. The Stone Age is dead. Now I was honored to have been asked to speak at the funeral. So of course, I accepted and said a few words the honor and pay homage to the stoner age. Our beloved friend, man we’re gonna miss you Stoner age, But it's time to let it go. And the Lit age is here. The stoner age is dead, but the lit age is here! Riding in on the shoulders of the Stoner Age. So it's a bittersweet baby. It's bittersweet. That's an all grinder segment. I'm gonna let you hear a little bit of my speech at the stoner age funeral. It's funny man. It's kind of goofy and silly, but I had a good time with it. I hope you will too. And in our roll up segment we're gonna dive into a brief, brief history of cannabis. Because there are a few things we all should know if we're going to be serious about becoming a true cannabis enthusiast. You know? We got to have a basic foundation of information and knowledge about cannabis so that, you know, we can know what we're dealing with, know what we're doing, And we can appreciate where we’re going, You know what I'm saying? Then after is our green pastures segment, Where we get into a bit of history, a bit of cannabis history as it pertains to cannabis and commerce. And we found some things man that were absolutely mind blowing. Through our research, we found some really interesting cannabis facts about how integral cannabis was. In the early stages of America's independence, some of it just blew my mind. Like, believe it or not, cannabis was used as money back in the day. Back in the early colonies. They used cannabis as money. They paid taxes with hemp plants, they paid off loan with hemp plants. I mean, it's just ridiculous. Cannabis was so, was so useful, and was so popular and was so common and was so needed by the government that they actually mandated each and every household in the colony of Jamestown to grow 100 cannabis plants, and it'll blow your mind with who mandated that.
You'll hear about that a little later in the green pasture segment. And then um, what else we got? In our munchie segment, we dive into the history of cannabis and food. We also list the top 10 munchies of all times. now when I tell you people get in their feelings about cannabis munchies man, let me tell you people get in their feelings. I mean, we could barely get through it. Eventually, I just had to go ahead and just, you know, pull rank and decided this is going to be my top 10. Because we couldn't get together on anything. We couldn't even agree on number 10, let alone five through one. But we got it done, baby. So like I said, that's in the munchies segment where we're gonna go over the top 10 munchies of all times, we're gonna give you a little background information on cannabis and food and how long people have been eating cannabis. And you have no idea but some of the experts believe it's been going on, hear this now , here this! - as long as 12,000 BCE. Now, does that make any sense? That's how long cannabis has been in an intimate relationship with mankind and civilization. It's been it's been there the whole way. But, um, like I said, that'll be in our green pasture segment. So yeah, like I said, it's our first show. We're excited. We're ready. And you know, we hope that we bring some value to you as far as your time is concerned and spending your time here with us here at relax. Its just cannabis. Because we fully appreciate you baby. Thank you so much for checking us out. We got a lot of love for the trailer. A lot of love for the trailer if you haven't heard it yet, check out the trailer wherever you get your podcast relax. Its just cannabis trailer and intro. It's about seven eight minutes long, but it gives you a clear view of ,you know , what we trying to do with this show. some of the details of the segments that we're going to get into like the grinder, the green pasture, the Dr. Feelgood and later we're going to add a segment called home grown. I think I'm going to try to grow my first cannabis plant for the first time you know, I think that'll be a lot of fun and really you know, because in this in this lit age it's legal. At least where I am. I'm in the Golden State of California and it's a beautiful thing because cannabis is legal recreationally as well as medicinal so I don't have to worry about it. And it's a beautiful thing. I wish that for the entire planet, let alone the United States of America because there's still places in this country believe it or not that you can go grab some cannabis and go straight to jail speaking of that … I'm gonna get heavy for a minute baby. Because why there are like you know, millionaires and billionaires and investors and all kinds of weirdos making money hand over fist in the cannabis market. They're still people locked in prison. Locked in prison. Now that's not fair. It's just not fair. We need to get those people you know so you know you got pooky and them locked up because he sold you know a quarter ounce to somebody. The police caught him and put him in jail for 10 years. And now you got people out here selling cannabis by the truckloads making millions of dollars and living it up. We got to get pooky and them out of jail. So listen, do me a favor. Google NORML. N O, R, M, L, and participate, because we need to do something about that man. Iis just out of control. And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the fact that while we are here partying, while I'm out here enjoying the lit age, There are people sitting in jail. And it's no good. So check out normal N O R M L Google it and participate. And that's about as heavy as I'm gonna get today, baby, the rest of the show is gonna be a party. You know what I mean? So again, thanks for checking us out.
10:35 GRINDER Segment
But we're gonna jump right into the grinder! Now, usually in the grinder, we'll take a look into pop culture trends, social media, and the bizarro world we live in. And what is going on in the world today? my goodness. I mean, it's just got out of hand, and it's, you know, I'm never mind. We're not even gonna deal with that. We're dealing with cannabis, which is the remedy to all this bullshit, trust me. Now like I said, normally, it's pop culture trending social media. Crazy stuff about the world that we'll pull in, we'll put it in the grinder, we'll grind it up, we'll roll it up. We'll fire it up, and we'll send it because that's how we feel about it. That's how we feel about it when we put something in the grinder. You know? And then after that, So, like I said, So normally, that's what we would do here on the grinder. So but what we're gonna do today, on this very first episode of relax, its just cannabis here in 2022. Can you believe it's 2022? I mean, what happened to 2021? You know, it's like, I felt like we didn't even get to know each other 2021 I mean, It's 2022 Goodness gracious. So, uh, like I was saying earlier, it's a sad, sad, sad situation, man. And unfortunately we got to do this on our very first episode, but you can't control life, you know, life just happens. Anything important or moving? Or…Seriously life changing that happens in your life happens out of the blue, you can't plan for it. And that's what we got caught up in here in the grinder Because normally, like I said, we wanted to do the pop culture, social media thing and have a good time. But we got sad news. Because like I said earlier, man, the Stone Age is dead. And what happened was, they invited me to say something. have a few words to pay my respects to the stoner age, they wanted me to do the complete eulogy, but I you know, I couldn't do it because I was just too upset. But I did speak for about five minutes about some of my experiences with the Stoner Age and you know, you can check that out, and we're gonna play that for you. To let you see how that went. All Right? Run it.
14:10 Stoner age funeral and eulogy
Ladies and gentlemen, it's a sad, sad situation. I'm honored and privileged to be here to speak on behalf of Generation X and how we felt about the stoner age because we’re gonna miss it. You know, we knew it well. But life takes its course. And things happen. And it's God's time, baby. So when he calls you home, guess what? You gotta jump in a Uber, and you gotta bounce you know, so I appreciate your thoughts and prayers as I try to get through this because it's gonna be tough for me, you know? Yeah. You know what, I'm gonna hold it together for the stoner age because the Stoner Age held it together for me. Now 1937, a year that lives in infamy. A bunch of powerful men. Cannabis prohibitionist also known as assholes. Used their government puppets and political prostitutes to force the marijuana Tax Act into law. Goodness. Now, this crime against humanity was a combination of a wicked agenda filled with racist propaganda to convince the public that a common household remedy, cannabis, was now evil. And all those that possess or use it deserve nothing less than prison. Now this hateful agenda filled with lies racism and sensational fear mongering forced cannabis underground, and the infamous subculture known as our beloved friend, the Stoner Age was born. We gather here today to lay the Stone Age to rest. Now we have a vast number of distinguish guests with us on this solemn occasion. And I think it's important to recognize some of them I see brothers Snoop Dogg over there. He over there chillin with Dr. Dre. What up Dre. Lone me twenty dollars. Willie Nelson’s over there, chillin. Cheech and Chong. I see Seth Rogen, Joe Rogan, y'all two related? No, right, right. We got billionaires with us here today too. We got Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Rihanna, Kylie Jenner. You know they smoke. We got an EGOT Miss Whoopi Goldberg. We got Quincy Jones.
We got Hip Hop represented. We got Cypress Hill, two Chainz, Wiz Khalifa, Afro man where’ve e you been Afroman? Remember Afro man? We got Ben and Jerry's. They're here representing Vermont and ice cream. We got Morgan Freeman…We got former presidents Believe it or not we got Barak Obama whatup berry. we got Bill I didn't inhale Clinton. Tricky bill. we got Jimmy Carter Ihow you doin mister Carter? we got Miss Miley Cyrus here we got Harold and Kumar remember them? Jennifer Lawrence What's up baby? We got Jay and Silent Bob , we got the dude from Big Lebowski… Dude. We got smoking and big worm from Friday's where Craig at? Oh he had to work? word word.
We got Shaggy and Scooby Doo now what you know about them? Shaggy and Scooby Doo. What yall doing here? We got to floyd from True Romance. Remember my guy ? go get some cleaning supplies. Robert De Niro's in the house. He came in to pay his respects. We got Bill and Ted. We got Ted the teddy bear sitting over there with Mark Walberg. Whatup baby.
we got Billy and Wyatt from EZ rider. Now y'all youngsters don't know nothing about easy Rider. Google it. We got Dale and Saul from Pineapple Express, Jamal and Silas from how high, Dave Chappelle and the fellas from half baked. We got elite athletes in the house. We got Michael Phelps, Ricky Williams, is that Schwarzenegger? The Diaz brothers in the back blazing already. Mike Tyson, Michael Jordan, Bill Walton, We got legends, we got legends here baby, everybody loves cannabis. And we're all here together to pay our respects to the stoner age.
We're all here because we all loved the stoner age. Now. I remember the first time I met this stoner age. Me and my little brother will back in Baltimore down on Baker Street off of poplar Grove back in the 70s we used to steal our aunties and uncles, roaches after they had a party or something you know, we get one or two roaches and we’d run outside somewhere, light the roaches, smoke the roaches and it was a good fucking time. I mean, you know, we were way too young to be smoking cannabis. So you know, let's just put that out there. But guess what? We got through it. We had a good time and we appreciated it. Now back then. It was Acapulco gold it was Thai stick remember that? Hawaiian sinsemilla Yeah, I used to love that Hawaiian man. Happy grass I used to call. Then later I moved to Cali and the Stoner Age introduced me to medical cards and dispensaries. Then ultimately, cannabis became legal recreationally. And then the Stoner Age died. What kind of timing is that? That was crazy.
We’ve all come to pay our respects to an age that profoundly affected America. Now, believe it or not, America was the catalyst for changing the world's opinion the cannabis. Now let that marinate. We gather here today to say our final goodbyes to a fun, sometimes goofy and immature age full of joy and laughter. But also, let's be honest, it was a polarizing age, and age filled with darkness, shame, fear, trauma, and all the maladjusted coping mechanisms and behaviors that come with that. But by the grace of God, it's over now. And it's sad to say, but the Stone Age is dead. It ran its course. It served its purpose. it kept cannabis alive and for that we're forever grateful, For that the stoner age will always have a special place in our hearts and minds. We'll never forget you stoner age We will cherish your memory forever, but it's over. It's done. You ran your race you passed your tests. And although I still can't believe it, the Stoner Age is dead. Now how will we remember the stone age? An age we all knew and loved. An age we all participated in whether publicly or privately. An age we all appreciate for being the protective vessel and strong hold that carried cannabis. The vessel that sustained cannabis, cultivated cannabis, nurtured cannabis. The stoner age protected cannabis and continued to boldly promote the extraordinary health benefits of cannabis in the face of a powerful adversary whose agenda of lies falsely argued otherwise. The Stoner Age has been the keeper of cannabis. The hero of cannabis. A flawed hero no doubt most heroes are but a hero nonetheless. So with a heroes honor and glory… we lay the stoner age to rest today. We lay the stoner age to rest today and say well done stoner age… well done. You ran your race. You passed your test. So rest now Stoner Age… rest in peace. In Jesus name… Amen and AmenSmokem’ if you got’em! Light one for the Stoner Age baby!
Now, before we close the coffin and lower the stoner age into the ground, let's bury some things with it. The term pothead, weed, stoner…. ashes to ashes dust to dust. Hotboxing …like I said, except if it's Mike Tyson But hotboxing, funky, dirty blunts. Giant rips they make you cough up a lung, Stoner stereotypes like lazy, unmotivated, dangerous, criminal. Negative reactions to the smell of cannabis. public shaming and bullying of cannabis users. Draconian and overzealous law enforcement. Bury that. Now, this one is gonna hurt some feelings. I know it is because of the way the industry is going these days. But like I said, I've been dealing with it for 30 years, so I want the best of the best. And bump the rest. Indoor cannabis bury that shit. Now if there's anything else y'all want to add to the grinder? Let us know. i mean, because it's time to bury all that stuff with the stoner age. You know we had to get rid of it .Its over with. The stoner age is done. Thanks for playing us stoner age.
26:39 The ROLL UP segment
So …let's jump straight into the roll up segment.
Now normally in the roll up segment, we review cannabis strains and we showcase and mystery shop dispensaries. But I think for this very first episode of relax, its just cannabis in this very first roll up segment, we're gonna dive into a little bit of cannabis history. Now I fell into a rabbit hole researching cannabis. Every time I peel the layer another layer was revealed. Cannabis history is fascinating man. It's full of wonderful surprises. So I thought I'd share some cannabis facts about cannabis history. Or at least some of the things I found interesting you know, just to help us to at least have a basic understanding of the history of cannabis and its symbiotic relationship with mankind because we need to know these things and we should know these things. Especially considering you know, personally, like I said, I’ve smoked cannabis for over 30 years. So you know, these are some things some basic things that we needed to know that I needed to know that you know, I learned so you know, I'm gonna share them with you. And we just buried the stoner age, God rest his beautiful soul, where ignorance ruled the day. it's the Lit age now baby. So it's the age of truth and knowledge about cannabis and inquiring minds want to know so let's dive into it. It's marijuana's New Age renaissance and it's a beautiful thing. Word.
Now what is cannabis?
Here's what I found. Cannabis, also known as marijuana is a psychoactive drug derived from the cannabis plant. Now the cannabis plant has been used as a recreational drug and as an entheogen. Now entheogen is an interesting word, so I looked that up. A Entheogen is a psychoactive substance… check this out. This is a deep. An entheogen is a psychoactive substance that alters perception, mood, consciousness and behavior for sacred spiritual development. Entheogens have also been used to supplement different practices used to help achieve transcendence like meditation, prayer rituals, ecstatic dance, chanting, yoga, etc. Now cannabis has been used for all these things, including and I think most importantly, as medicine for over 2500 years most importantly, I say, because it's the medicinal effectiveness of cannabis that has been integral in ushering in the Lit age of cannabis that we're so blessed to be in the midst of today. Without medicinal cannabis, recreational cannabis is a lot tougher to achieve and that's just a fact. Now cannabis components, and for our purposes, we're gonna focus on just two components of the cannabis plant, CBD and THC. I say just two because the plant has at least 480 known compounds as well as over 100 other cannabinoids, including CBD.
Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, is the main psycho active component of cannabis, meaning it's the THC that gets you high. It's the THC that induces the effects of cannabis everyone loves like euphoria, relaxation, alteration of conscious perception, increased awareness of sensations altered perceptions of time and space, increased appetite, increased creativity, increased libido, joy, laughter, introspection, enhanced stimulation from things like music, food, art, social interaction, sex, games, especially video games, dancing, hiking, any outdoor activity, you name it! its better with cannabis. Trust.
Now, you know, we need to be adults, and we need to be responsible and we need to have all the information. So let's talk a little bit about the risks of cannabis use. Now, just so we clear
any risks associated with cannabis use are almost always a result of over consumption.
This is why dosage is so important. Especially for you newbies, this is why we recommend smoking cannabis. Again, like I said, especially for you newbies, because dosing is far easier to control. With smoking cannabis, the effects are felt almost immediately. So it's a lot easier to adjust your intake until you find your happy place. As opposed to eating cannabis and waiting up to 90 minutes before you get any real sense of how high you might be and you'll probably be too high. I know I was first time I ate cannabis. And I'm a vet smoking wise. But as I found out, eating it don't give a shit about how experienced you are as a smoker. And that's just a fact. More of my experience with edibles during the doctor Piomelli interview. So listen …if you consume too much cannabis, the risks are anxiety, delusions, panic, paranoia, brief psychosis, impaired body movement, short term memory loss,
all of which are highly survivable and easily treated, believe it or not, with a warm bath or shower. So if you OD on cannabis, you eat too many edibles and you know you can't handle yourself, jump in a warm shower immediately while you run a warm bath. And get in a warm bath and soak. I wish I knew this when I ate that damn brownie. I tell you that shit right now. Because I was running around the damn apartment you know sweating and shit man, you know, my shirt was off and I took my shoes and socks off because I knew I was walking around the apartment but I couldn't feel my feet. It was a problem. I wish somebody would have told me get your black ass in a warm shower or take a warm bath and you’ll feel better man.
Now you can either do that or a few drops of CBD oil under your tongue and that should calm you down and get you to a more settled place. So even so called Od-ing on cannabis is highly survivable. Now long term overuse can induce more serious psychological issues like auditory and visual illusions, pseudo hallucinations and dissociative states like depersonalization, which is described as periods of feeling disconnected or detached from your body or thoughts, or feeling like you're observing yourself from outside your body, like being in a dream. It also can cause Derealization, which is the feeling of being detached from one's surroundings. Again, these risks are attributed to long term overuse, which, you know, with responsible use cannabis risks are minimal and far less worrisome
than the risks associated with alcohol or junk food for example, and that's just facts. So as long as you're careful about dosage, you'll be fine trust but go with smoking newbies. Using edibles as an introduction to cannabis is ill advised. Trust me, the chances of you getting the dosages wrong are high. And who wants to wait an hour to feel something anyway? That's wack.. because the anxiety most experienced while anticipating the unknown is considerable which spoils what should be a fun and joyful experience. Take a few small hits on a joint, not so much you know, where you’re coughing and going crazy, you know? And you'll be good. Get you a nice pre roll. I like Lowell’s. Lowell’s pre rolls, to me, are perfect Son. Go to your dispensary get some Lowell’s, share a couple with your friends take a few hits of that, put it out man, I'm trying to tell you you’ll be in a good place. It's a very nice experience, especially compared to some of those goofy pre rolls out there with the psychedelic bubblegum wraps that look like something you get at a rave, Get you some Lowell’s and be an adult. Like I said, we're mature cannabis enthusiast up in here. So get your pre roll man, smoke one and then relax. Forget about the edibles. Jumping to edibles is ill advised especially if you're new to cannabis.
And I hate to keep beating this dead horse but it's important because usually most of the bad incidences or the bad experiences people have with cannabis are because they ate it because they didn't for some reason. Well, I know the reason is propaganda, mind control so you don't want to smoke it because every image of smoking cannabis has been programmed into your mind for you to feel like it's bad or it's negative. So you think oh, I'll be slick and pop a gummy. And that's just like somebody who's never had liquor, you giving them a shot on 151
It's just crazy. You're not going to be able to handle it. So get you a pre roll, man take a few hits, put that joint out. And you know it's gonna be a good time. and don't forget to inhale, relax. La Bon ton roulette baby. Let the good times roll. Oh, you know what?... Oh my bad. How can I forget the absolute worst side effects of cannabis? Because there's one side effect, depending on where you live ,is, you know it kicks everything out of the box as far as the negative things I just read right there. but the worst side effect of cannabis is you might get arrested. Depending on where you live. Now imagine that. Yikes, the humanity. Goodness gracious. So…that's it for the roll up segment. Like I said normally you know we showcase the strain of the week in the roll up segment and we showcase a dispensary and or mystery shop a dispensary and let you know what we thought of a dispensary what we thought of the service, what we thought of the experience, what we thought of the product, the prices the selection. And you know, I'm letting dispensaries know because you can send us an email if you want us to come in and mystery shop your dispensary shoot us an email here at relax its just cannabis@gmail.com and we'll come check you out but just know one thing. Me personally I'm looking for Sun grown, outdoor organic premium cannabis. now indoor cannabis you know you do what you do. I'm not mad at you. indoor cannabis is really what most people end up smoking because you know the market is full of indoor cannabis we call, I call it warehouse weed. Could you imagine raising a plant that never sees the sun that never gets to breathe fresh air, that spends its entire life under hot lights being forced fed chemicals? and you know
t's ridiculous man …being exposed to unnatural light patterns, you got hot lights. I mean, it's just ridiculous. But you know, people love it. So do your thing. I'm not mad at you. But as for me being a 30 year veteran being a little bit more health conscious about not only what I smoke, but what I eat and when I drink I want to know where it comes from as much as possible. I mean, you know, I'm gonna put the effort in because like I say I'm a little older and you need to be careful about that kind of shit. So I want to know where this cannabis comes from. And from my experience with cannabis. I like the outdoor premium product something that was grown in the sun you know, naturally and you know, it's a beautiful thing. And to me the highs a little different. The indoor weed high is a little too tweaky for me. Now some people don't have that experience but for me, I feel like if I'm you know, indoor, it feels different to me. Now I'm not saying you don't get just this high, because you do but the experience the feeling, the nuances of the of the high are a little bit different and and like I said I've been getting down for 30 years I want to smoke clean weed that's been kissed by God. And you know, indoor cannabis, you know some of it you know greenhouses borderline I deal with greenhouse cannabis. Okay at least its real sunshine, you know what I mean? And they can open the windows and let the fresh air flush out all the plants so you know, I'm good with greenhouse but I prefer Organic, outdoor Sun grown premium cannabis. So if you email us and want us to come check your dispensary out, you know you need to have at least, you know, a decent selection of that type of product for me for my personal preference. So that was the roll up segment.
40:23 GREEN PASTURES segment
So let's jump into our green pastures. that's the Wall Street bell because you know, billions and billions of dollars are being made from cannabis man. It's gotten out of hand. I mean, not gotten out of hand is a beautiful thing. Don't get me wrong, I mean, but man its crazy. Cats that don't even love cannabis Cats that dont even use cannabis. But they had a big pile of money somewhere investing in cannabis and they are killing it. So the green pasture segment is normally where we deal with cannabis business, cannabis industry, cannabis tech and aspects of cannabis legalization. But I'm for this first episode for our very first episode here in relax. Its just cannabis. We figured we deal with a little bit of a brief history of cannabis and commerce. like I was talking about and I was teasing earlier about some of the stuff that the United States government used to do back in the colonial days and how hemp was so integral in the development of this country. Its crazy but anyway,
now the cannabis plant has been thought to go back as far as 12,000 BCE, most scholars believe it originated in the region of central and southern Asia. With some of the earliest records of cannabis emanating from China in Japan. Cannabis was among the very first crops to be cultivated by the first agriculturalists and ever since mankind has maintained an intimate relationship with cannabis. As a spread throughout the world, cannabis has been touted and accepted as everything from a path and doorway to enlightenment.to a rugged textile to a wondrous medicinal aid. Some believe that cannabis found its way to North America by way of the Vikings, now I knew I liked the Vikings, some think the Vikings brought cannabis to North America as early as 600 ad, if not by them, then definitely by the Spanish and Portuguese during the Age of colonization back in the 1500s.
Now the earliest records of cannabis in trade and commerce began with the domestication of the plant in Mongolia and Siberia, as early as 2000 BC. By 500 BC, people in Asia were commonly using cannabis medicinally and recreationally. It traveled the Silk Road by way of a nomadic tribes of Central Asia, the herding tribes, the Aryans and the Bronze Age Scythians, where it was introduced into India, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, and it also spread with the expanding Roman Empire even into Britain by 400 ad.
Cannabis was traded as a textile in the form of hemp, which are the strong fibers extracted from the cannabis plant stalk, used to make everything from paper to apparel and most importantly, the sails that propelled the ships of the world powers at the time. As well as the rope and cordage to control those sails. The seeds, cannabis seeds, were traded as a highly nutritious food item. Cannabis was also traded as a multiple use medicine and a psychoactive recreational drug. Here in America Cannabis was commonly used for all these things by the early 1600s. In the very first successful British colony, Jamestown, who were obligated, did you hear me, obligated under contract to the Virginia Company to grow hemp. by 1611 King James, yes, that King James. So the same year that he, King James, translated the Bible. He mandated cannabis cultivation. anyway I like King James because he’s all about the Lord and he said you know what? y'all need to grow more cannabis. He sounds like my kind of guy. Probably not , You know how that shit goes. but anyway, King James mandated the cultivation of hemp by all American colonies, all of them to the point of forcing, forcing each colonial household to grow 100 plants each. So obviously, it was a vitally important commodity. So much so, farmers were allowed to pay off debt with hemp. In Massachusetts, hemp was accepted as payment for taxes. Now ain't that crazy? goodness, it was even used as currency in the developmental stages of the American monetary system, because counterfeiting was rampant and hemp was always in demand. And its quality was consistent. That’s crazy. Now, the same country, the same country that used hemp to become a world power, that used Hemp as medicine for its population, that also accepted hemp as money. I mean, you paid your taxes with hemp. You know what I mean? And that same country turned around and said, You know what hemp is evil, hemp is bad. If we catch you with it, we're gonna put ass in jail and what kind of shit is that? Most of that was racially based, you know, most of it was because they hated the Mexicans, and they hated black folk. And you know, that's a fact. And they wanted some kind of way to lock our black asses up and the Mexicans up so they say you know what, and matter of fact, that's where marijuana comes from. The term Marijuana comes from you know, our Spanish brothers who you know, that's what they called it. So, Ricky bobby and them decided, you know what? We’re done with these cats we need to lock them up and since they like to smoke weed, we like to smoke it too. But they keep it more than we do. So let's lock them up. And that's what it was. That's it. That's just how it is. It’s a sad thing but it's true. Oh, well.
46:47 MUNCHIES segment
Let's uh, let's jump into the munchie. Now usually in the munchies segment we'll deal with cannabis friendly venues, cannabis restaurants, cannabis chefs, premium edibles.
But this time since this is our first episode, and we need to establish at least a foundation of basic knowledge about cannabis if we're going to be serious about becoming cannabis enthusiast. Now, I'm serious. I've been a cannabis consumer for 30 years but you know, especially these last few weeks in researching cannabis for this show I mean, I've come to the sobering conclusion I didn't really know shit about cannabis. So it's refreshing to me and it's, it's fulfilling to me to learn these things about something that I've loved for a very long time. It's like you know, the girl you’re in love what you find a favorite song, you find out what a favorite song is. It's a beautiful thing. So, like I said in this in munchies segment, we're gonna deal with the history of cannabis and food. Now, cannabis as a food goes as far back as 2000 BC. That’s how long folks have been eating cannabis since 2000 BC. it's crazy. But most folks think cannabis is, you know, evil, something that those other folks do. Everybody did it. We just learned that the government even mandated that every household, King James your boy, King James, you know, translated the Bible King James, that very same year 1611 that very same year, translated the Bible, I think the cannabis made him feel like well, you know what we need to we need to deal with God because this is just wonderful. This had to come from God. You know, but anyway, that same year 1611 King James, that King James, mandated that every colonial household grow at least 100 plants, we just learned that so now , cannabis and food, we're learning now that cannabis in food goes all the way back to 2000 BC. Now they weren’t eating gummies and concentrates. You know, back then, cannabis wasn’t nearly as strong as it is now. So calm down with all that. But uh, back in 2000 BC, although hash was the most popular form of edible cannabis back then. So, they are written records of cannabis being traded and touted as a nutritious food commodity as far back as 400 AD.
The ethnobotanist believe cannabis was one of the very first plants cultivated for food back in the Neolithic period. The period from the beginning of agriculture around 12,000 years ago to the widespread use of bronze as tools and weapons, or the Bronze Age, about 6500 years ago.
Now, interestingly, cannabis consumption is thought to coincide with what anthropologists call the Great Leap Forward in music, art, religion in agriculture. That’s crazy. They didn't did the studies. And they said when the culture has made these huge leaps forward, leaps forward in music, art, religion and agriculture. It coincided with the consumption of cannabis. What is going on? But anyway, cannabis was also found in medieval times folk recipes. They had a recipe back in Uzbekistan called Guc- kand I think I'm pronouncing that right. I don't think so. G U C K A N D, which was a confection made with sugar, saffron and egg whites given to baby boys to numb the pain of circumcision. Yikes. It was also eaten by women to put them in the mood. And for men, there was a joy Porridge made with almond butter, cannabis, spices honey and sugar. That sounds pretty good. Back in 1465, cannabis edibles were formally introduced to Europe by the author Bartholomew Plantina, in his cookbook entitled, in honorable pleasure and health. The first formal written cannabis recipe in the United States, is credited to Miss Alice B Toklas. Written sometime in the early 1960s. The book the Alice B Toklas cookbook included a recipe for Hashish fudge. And of course, the recipe was omitted from the American edition of the cookbook because of the 1937 marijuana tax act.
52:05 BROWNIE STORY
But Ms. Toklas’ name and her hash infused fudge brownies were made famous by the Stoner Age counterculture of the 1960s. She and much later activist Mary Rathbun. known as brownie Mary of the 1970s stoner counterculture. were credited with being the first mothers of pot brownies. Ain't that cool? So we owe pot brownies to brownie Mary, Miss Mary Rathbun. And Miss Alice B. Toklas. Thank you, ladies. We appreciate you. So, um, speaking of brownies, let me tell you about this brownie story. When I had my very first edible. So like I said, I've been smoking for 30 years, man. And I had this job at a restaurant in Hollywood. And my manager cool Italian cat from Connecticut.
You know, he made some pot brownies. And he asked me, he said you like brownies? You like brownies. I said I've never had pot brownies. He said, But you know, he knew I smoked because we would go outside back and smoke at the end of the shift. So he knew I smoked and he was like, man, I’m make some brownies this weekend. I'm gonna bring you one next week. I said cool. Bring me one. I I’d like to try it. So anyway, he comes in and he gives me the brownie. The brownie was about. Let me see. I want to say maybe, maybe, maybe three inches, four inches square at the most. Yeah, about three and a half, three and a half inches three to four inches square. Now my man said. Now listen, these are really strong. So what you do is you take it n the morning with a cup of coffee. You cut it in four pieces. You take one of the pieces you eat that with some coffee. now he warned me he said listen, these a really strong and since you've never eaten brownies before, what's gonna happen is you're gonna feel a little queasy, he said, but that'll go away. But just eat like one of the corners, put the rest in the fridge and eat it with your coffee. Give it about an hour. And you know, see how you feel. I'm like, Okay, now. Cool, but uh, he's a little teeny cat. Maybe? Maybe five five and maybe 140 or 50 pounds. little teeny Italian cat. Cool as hell though. So I'm like okay, immediately I'm like, okay, wait till I’ve already made up my mind. Okay, I'm gonna, I'm gonna do half a brownie because this little you know, I'm OG I've been smoking since seventh grade. I mean, I’ve already made up my mind I'm gonna eat at least half the brownie. I had already made in my mind. Now I didn’t say that shit to him because I didn't want to be disrespectful. I said, Okay, I'm gonna do what you say. So next, he said, the thing that was most curious to me was he said to me, wait till your off day. Wait until my day off? yeah I'm thinking I'm gonna go home tonight, you know eat this little brownie and shit maybe try to get the old lady to try a piece of it and you know, wait on the three ring circus up in that joint we was going in you know, but anyway so he said wait till your off day and luckily the next day was my off day so I didn't have to wait long so, uh so the next morning I get up you know, The old lady, you know she gets ready for work she bounces up out of there. And you know, I'm like, okay, cool, you know, it's time for me to have my first brownie experience. lol I was excited about it, man. So I did like my man said I cut it in four pieces. Now. I did, you know, I'm proud of myself and I'm proud to say that I didn't go overboard initially, I did follow his directions and ate a corner with a cup of coffee. I gave it about an hour. I didn't feel shit. Like I said, I've been smoking for 30 years I smoke joints. So I'm used to, You literally can feel the difference or the effects of cannabis at least I can almost immediately after the exhale like once you get there man and you know it settles on you nice and smooth. But anyway, brownies, I mean edibles aren't like that. So I eat a little quarter brownie. I drink a cup of coffee I'm watching morning television whatever it is a goofy ass morning shows. I'm not feeling nothing. So anyway. I get a phone call my homie called Yo what you doing? I said man sitting here chillin he said, You off today. I'm like, Yeah, I'm off what's going on? He said Ima come swoop you and we were gonna go to one of the other homies house. I know. Okay, cool. Come swoop me. Now he lived about maybe. about 30 minutes away on other side of LA. We lived in Hollywood at this time. I'm on like, Crescent Heights. And I don't know if you know, Hollywood. I tend to think everybody does, but I lived like Crescent Heights and, shit. I can't even remember, like Hollywood Boulevard and Crescent Heights like right around in that area. So anyway, he said, I'm gonna come swoop, I'm like, Cool. So, you know, I'm not I'm like, you know, at this point. I'm getting dressed I'm gonna go hang out with the homies. I don't know what's going on with this brownie. Shit. You know what, let me eat another one of piece. Mistake. It was a mistake. So I pop another corner of the brownie. So now I'm up to half a brownie. I felt a little queasy. And then that's the first effect I felt. I remember my man Ken told me. He said listen, you might feel a little queasy. Don't worry about it’ll go away. So I'm like, okay, so I started to feel a little queasy. Okay, so I'm feeling a little queasy something must be happening. But at this point, I had already popped the other half. So I'm getting dressed. About a half an hour later things just got things just got out of control, bro. I mean, I felt like I had never felt like that before. Let's just say that. I felt like every inch of my skin was buzzing you know how ,you know. your phone vibrates on the table when you got it on vibrate?
I felt like my entire body was doing that. My whole body. so I got scared bro. When I tell you I got scared. I got scared. So because I had never felt that before. So first thing I did. I jumped up to my feet and I say okay, so what was going on? So you know, I'm nervous now. So now I'm walking around. I'm like, okay, okay, okay, this is different now. I'm already a little nervous and I'm feeling a little anxiety. I never had these experiences before. Now, the first thing that tripped me out it really scared me was like I said, I'm pacing around the apartment. But at some point look down at my feet as I'm pacing around the apartment and realize I can't feel my fucking feet. Now I see my damn feet. I see I'm walking, but I can't feel my feet on the ground bro. And I lost it. I started immediately sweating profusely.
It was a bad situation and it kept elevating, elevating, elevating. Now after I couldn't feel my feet is when I was you know, at this point I'm like, Okay, I need to get some help. But like I said the old lady had just left for work. She wasn't even into cannabis. She hated cannabis. She used to frown upon it. She used to frown all the time she smelled it on me it was all kind of attitude about cannabis. So it's not like I'm gonna call her at work baby, you need to come check on me. I ate a brownie, because you know what she would have said, That’s what you get! So I'm floating and levitating around the apartment, sweating like a dog and scared to death. And it kept bumping up a level, bumping up another level. So I said to myself, Okay, at this point, I'm in the bathroom, staring in the mirror, my eyes are purple. Like I said, I've been smoking weed for 30 years. So I'm used to red bloodshot eyes, but you listen, my eyes were purple. When I saw that. I freaked out at extra levels. I turned the water on. I'm splashing water on my face. I'm trying to get it together. Now I was so gone. Then, after I went through the purple eyes thing and I'm splashing water. And I knew it was over. So I went into prayer.
I started praying, Lord Jesus, now I know I’m not about to go out the box or no brownie. I mean, I'm serious. I'm seriously praying for Lord Jesus, my Lord and Savior to come down and rescue me from this brownie experiment because it was getting bad. So after the prayers, and I'm still buzzing and can't feel my feet, and every time I walk, it feels like a moon walking or slipping and sliding and shit I can see my feet. But I can't feel them so I'm freaked out. My eyes are purple. And I went to the Lord's Prayer and splashed, I went to the cold water. I went to the pep talk you big Larry. You're not gonna be taken out by no brownie! Get your shit together. I'm trying to talk to myself and get it together. And so, I pulled the parachute. I went to get the phone. Because I'm about to 911 it. because you know I’m about to 911 it. A 30 year cannabis vet taken out by half a brownie. So I grabbed the phone.
I hit nine… one. Now the only thing, this is how this is how crazy it was, the only thing that kept me from hitting that other one was because then the paranoia kicked in. What am I going to tell them? They're gonna ask me questions. What's wrong? They gonna ask me where I got the brownie from. They gonna want to lock me up. I'm gonna lose my job. I'm gonna go to jail. I might get Rodney Kinged.
Purple eyes, can't feel my feet. Skin buzzing like my phone vibrates. Now here come a Mark Furman and them to get my ass because I called the paramedics and the paramedics gonna snitch. Crazy. So that's really the only reason I didn't call 911 Because I got so paranoid that I was gonna have to go to jail because they was gonna snitch. So now I don't know if you remember about this time. But back then. Those little goofy ass laser pointers. Remember those laser pointers?
Those little goofy ass laser pointers were really popular and everybody had one on a keychain and they could play games with a laser pointer. So anyway. I'm paranoid… Rodney King and I'm about to get my ass beat and I'm about to die. My eyes are purple and I can't feel my feet. God save me. I'm calling the Holy Spirit in the room. Now it was summertime. So all the windows were open.
And we lived on the second floor of this apartment complex in Hollywood right on Hollywood Boulevard. Now, at this point, I totally forgot that my boy was coming to swoop me. My boy fishing. Now he since passed. rest in peace. Fish. My man Rod Foster. I love you boy. We miss you. But he since passed, but anyway. He's one of the closest homie so I totally forgot that he was coming to get me because I was going through this life survival experience because of a brownie in my apartment on Hollywood Boulevard. And I'm really trying to get it together. so he's now arrived and I don't know he's there but he's arrived and you know how your buddies always like to fuck with you so
now I'm walking around apartment scared about the police because I' talked myself into fact, not only am I about to die, but I gotta die by myself because I can't call nobody because if I call somebody, um I had to go to jail because I ate a brownie. so I'm walking around apartment paranoid sweating got the phone in my hand can't feel my feet trying to get it together. Oh God oh God oh God. Now at this very moment a red dot starts dancing all on the wall inside the apartment and my head almost exploded
Because like I told you at this point I've talked myself into the police are coming to get me so I'm thinking that Damn, somebody already called them. Am I in here yelling? Am I making too much noise? somebody's called them and swat is shining the goddamn guns in the house already.
Oh my god. So you know, it's my boy fishing outside being an asshole shining one of those goofy as lasers in the window. but I don't know this. I'm thinking its SWAT and they’re gonna kill me. And I'm gonna go to jail. It is gonna be a problem. So man, I'm done. The only thing that kept me from, I don't know what kept me from jumping out of my skin. When I saw the red dot floating on the wall dancing on the wall because I didn't know what the fuck it was but I'm like oh shit cops is here. But that's my boy. I don't know it's my boy yet right but you know he fucking with me. He don't know what I'm going through in the house. He is thinking he bout to come get me and we about to go get high but I'm already super fucked up. Anyway. He shone a light on the wall and my heart is about to jump out of my chest. Now just like the fellas always do. you know how they do once they start fucking with you they don't stop and like I said he don't know what I'm going in the house. So he shining the light in the window and driving me crazy. I mean I hit the floor! I got low bro I've got this brownie situation out of control. and so I hit the floor so of course you know what he does next. Boom boom boom boom knocking on the door. Oh my God I'm laughing now because I can just imagine how I was looking man I can just imagine so, he's banging on the door and like the police like he did every time he came to the house. But this particular time I'm in there going through a brownie situation that's out of control so he’s knocking on the door. Boom Boom boom. I'm already on the ground. I crawl my ass in the bedroom. Right I'm behind the damn bedroom door bro. Sweating can't feel my feet eyes are purple I cant feel my feet and somebody called the police and they at the front door. Don't answer the door don't answer the door don't answer the door so I didn't answer. because So he's probably thinking I know I just told him I'm about to come pick him up. I know he’s in there. So he walks back down the steps, sees the windows open. So he starts calling my name. Larry/ Big Larry? The fuck you doing in there. And I'm think it’s the cops and how the fuck they know my name? They about to get me. So eventually it clicked and I recognized his voice. So I'm still scared so I'm crawled to the window I look out the window like
They about to take my head off like snipers. about to take my head off when I see my boy
I’m like oh my god its fishin. So I open the door he comes in looks at me and he says man What the fuck is wrong with you? What is wrong with you bro? What is going on you all right? I say Man, my eyes purple, but their big as saucers. I'm walking around with my high beams on looking like a crackhead because I'm scared sweating and I cant feel my feet my eyes are purple. He says man what's going on with you? You all right? I say man, Let me tell you man I still I still got the phone in my hand. The phone is dripping with sweat because my hands so sweaty. I say man, I just ate some brownies. And man, you know, I can't handle it. That was the first time in my life I told a grown man I couldn't handle something. But I said it for them damn brownies bro. I can't handle it, man. He just started laughing. He asked me how much did you eat? I went in the freezer and got the half that was left and showed it to him gave it to him. I said here, man. He said how much did you eat about this much? I said yeah. He said Man, you ate too much. He said, have you eaten it before. And I'm like, Nah, man, it's my first time. So
said I got it from my manager. So I know its good. I aint trippin or nothing. I know its good I just ate too much. So I said, Man, listen, you can keep that shit. Take that shit. So you know,
Once he was there you know, uh, you know, it took me a little minute, but I finally got it together and calmed down. And we got up outta there. But man, he talked shit about me for about two weeks on that shit. All the rest of that day. He talked shit about me. And when people would look at me, they knew that he wasn’t lying because like I said, I was high for two days. My eyes stayed purple all day long.
I was off that day, but I had to go to work the next day. I had a lunch shift. So I walked into my shift. My manager that gave me the brownie. He's there. He takes one look at me. He said, man, let me talk to you. And we went back in the office. He said did you eat that brownie? I said yeah man. He said man go home your eyes are like purple. He said, Man just go home. told you just eat a a little piece. I told you it was strong. So thank God, he was cool. And I think he was just scared that he gave it to me and you know, he didn't know how I was gonna deal with it. But I just took my ass home man and slept it off. But so that's what I'm trying to tell you. Be careful with those edibles, especially if you're new to it. You know, because it's just a whole different high. And then I learned some things from Dr. Piomelli in the, in the segment with him. The Dr. Feelgood segment that apparently when you eat cannabis, it gets processed by your liver. And apparently the liver does something to the THC that makes it three times stronger. Ain't that crazy? So if you smoke cannabis and your lungs process and absorb it and gets into your bloodstream through your lungs, its is an entirely different chemical. But when you eat it and your liver processes, it turns it into some different kind of THC that has three times the potency of the THC that's in the brownie or in the edible or in the gummy. That's crazy. So that was my brownie story. So I haven't dealt with edibles since. It's easy because like I said, the quality of cannabis here in California. I'm blessed, its the best stuff on the planet without a doubt. So like I said 10 minutes from my house is three dispensaries within a ten minute walking distance. So there's no need to eat cannabis. So I did try it again. I went to Palm Springs with some friends to a tennis tournament in Palm Springs and we got a house. We rented a house and in PGA west and my guy had some cookies, but I just ate half I took half, but I only broke off a quarter of it and took a quarter of it and you know, just threw the rest in the trash. I was like, I'm not eating the whole fucking thing. And that was cool. But we were already so drunk and high from you know, being in Palm Springs partying and shit going to see the BNP Paribas .Going into the tournament, that, you know, I couldn't really feel you know, whatever the cookie did, but let me tell you that brownie. and I haven't done it since I was like, You know what, I'm good with that shit. And it's good that I don't because, like Dr. Piomelli told me it's a whole different thing if you eat it, no matter how long you've been smoking, the entirety of the your tolerance, the tolerance that you've developed from smoking, cannabis has nothing to do with the tolerance because you haven't developed a tolerance to the kind of THC that the liver turns it into. And you have no tolerance for that unless you've been eating cannabis a lot. Now, there's some folks that could have ate the whole brownie. I know some folks that prefer edibles. And, you know, they'll have like 20 milligrams or something edible and be good, but not for me. I'm good with that. But that's the brownie story, man. It's crazy. So, like I said, you know, I went off on a tangent just because you know, that was crazy. But we're in the What is this? This is the oh yeah, this is the Munchies. The Munchies segment. We gave you a little history about cannabis and food. And I told you my brownie story and oh yeah, the top 10 munchies.
TOP TEN MUNCHIES
Now like I said, this list. nobody in the room agreed. So it's like, Okay, we're gonna I'll just, You know what this is getting out of hand. Let me just choose the ones I want to choose. And yall can be pissed off if yall want to. But I’m big Larry and that’s how it goes so. Number 10.
Number 10 favorite munchies of all time. Number 10. Is candy. So any kind of candy especially little small pieces of candy now and later's, Jolly Ranchers. peppermints. Chocolate, Snickers you know, whatever kind of candy you like, that's number 10. Number 10. All Time cannabis munchies. Number 10 is candy. Now, number nine Tacos. Tacos, you can't ever go wrong with that. Now the reason we got into a fight about tacos because folks felt like tacos should have been at least top five and then you know, that's a solid argument. That's a solid argument. But since I took over since, it just got out of hand and so you know what? I like Tacos. Tacos is on the list so I'm putting them at number nine. So tacos is number nine. Number eight… pastries, cookies and cakes. So any kind of snack cakes. That includes donuts.
You know? Girl Scout cookies. You know the real cookies. Aint it crazy that there’s a strain of cannabis called Girl Scout cookies and it's some good fire. But is it? I don't know if it's indoor or not. Anyway. pastries, cookies and cakes are number eight on the top 10. Munchies list number seven nachos. Now of course, you know not a lot of people. Like I say I live in California. So I tend to, you tend to assume that the world is like the place you see every day. I know that you know a lot of places in the country. Folks aren't really getting real Nacho so… but I'm gonna leave that alone number seven on the list. Nachos number six on the list… Chips. Back in Baltimore. We used to call them zoozoos and whamwhams. That includes Fritos, potato chips, all flavors, pretzels, tortilla chips, Doritos, Cheetos puffs, all that junk food crap. That's not even really food its an industrial food product. But that's for another show. But chips. Chips at number six on the all time munchies list. Let's see. Oh, then number five is one of my favorite… ice cream. Man. Now ice cream you gotta be careful with you got to really love ice cream because when you smoke cannabis and you eat ice cream, or any kind of creamy kind of food, you know, it tends to get a little sticky in your mouth and you get like sort of like this film in your mouth and its Not really pleasant, but I love ice cream. Ice cream is one of my favorite foods period not just cannabis munchies so but the only reason it's not number one is because when you smoke cannabis and eat ice cream, it's a different experience because of the mouthfeel thing but number five… iced cream... number four …number four on the all time munchies lists, fried chicken. chicken nuggets etc.
No explanation for chicken. My personal favorites… You know I love Roscoe's. Roscoe's always seems to fry chicken right? Who else? Of course Wingstop and Buffalo Wild Wings gets nice too. I like those too. You know, I stopped eating the fast food nuggets, man. I just seen too much
literature on fast food and especially meat products. So I don't eat it. I used to get the 20 pack of Mcdonald's chicken nuggets, son. So you know I love the Wendy's chicken nuggets too. I used to rough off the Burger King joints but I stopped eating that stuff now. I haven't had a chicken nugget or any kind of fast food nugget I’ll say at least three years it's probably been longer than that. But I know for sure it's been at least three years but t's recognized worldwide as one of the favorite munchies and usually what I found with these munchies things is usually when you smoke cannabis is a little small stuff. You know, we got tacos, we got pastries, cookies, nachos, chips, ice cream, excuse me. And number four is fried chicken chicken nuggets. Now number three… Pizza. And it's hard to argue with pizza. Pizza. You know, there's no way pizza could’ve have been on the list anything lower than five. So pizza is number three. Number three is pizza. Number two, all time munchies of all time burgers. Now of course this was the big argument right here because some people say well, it should be burgers and chicken sandwiches. I'm like but we got fried chicken. Fried chicken is implied in he fried chicken joint? No, it's not because we got into an argument about chicken sandwiches as opposed to chicken legs and I'm thinking chicken sandwiches goes on the fried chicken and chicken nuggets but they like no it's more like a burger. I'm like, come on. But whatever. So you know I pulled rank on that. And as you know it burgers are number two. Number one all time favorite. Now, I need to I need to give a little explanation. It's really my top 10 list because like I said we couldn't come to any kind of consensus at all on any number of anything. So for me, my number one all time favorite. Cannabis munchies… french fries. Can't go wrong with french fries, baby. My favorites are. Let's see. Five guys, five guys are always banging. Always. Who else? in and out. I like In and Outs french fries. And listen. I used to OD on McDonald's french fries. Man but they broke my heart when that whole yoga mat joint… they put the chemicals that they use. I You want to know how McDonald's french fries used to be so perfect. anyway, Google it. It was a whole drama. Subway with the yoga mat chemical in the bread that made the bread so perfect. Yeah, McDonald's was kind of on that same tip. So again, I haven't had McDonald's french fries. And it's been at least three years now. You know, but I've been on a more healthier kick. Well, mainly because my old lady she's, she's the health nut and thank God for her. But so I left the fast food alone. It's like once I learned that something is… once I learned the nitty gritty about something, it's easy for me to make choices, especially as I'm getting older. And you need to as you get older and you need to take care of your health you need to be conscious of the things you put in your body because it matters. And now I say that after just giving you the top 10 list of munchies. But you know, it is what it is everything in moderation as long as you're not eating this stuff every day, I would say once a month would be you know, acceptable, you know once a week okay, I get that. You know I went there for a long time but those are the top 10 cannabis munchies number 10 Candy, number nine tacos. Number eight. pastries, cookies and cakes. Number seven
nachos number six any kind of chips we call them zoozoos and whamwams. Number five is ice cream number four fried chicken, chicken nuggets, chicken sandwiches, you can throw that there. Number three pizza, any kind of pizza number two burgers and number one french fries
so that's how that goes. So that's that for the munchies. Like I said normally we would interview or showcase cannabis restaurants cannabis chef's, premium edibles. But this time we gave you a little brief history of cannabis and food. And we gave you the top, our you know, my top 10 list of cannabis munchie so there you go. So, without further adieu… we are about to get into Dr. Feelgood.
1:26:08 DR. FEELGOOD segment, Dr. Daniele Piomelli interview
Now ladies and gentlemen, the Dr. Feelgood segment is where we talk to doctors and scientists at the leading edge of cannabis research and treatment. We discuss exciting news from the medical cannabis sector, all things CBD and also it's where we share inspiring stories from folks whose lives have been greatly improved by medical cannabis. And man. Do we have a major player at the forefront of cannabis research for you today?
t's an understatement to say that we are beyond honored and privileged to have a distinguished doctor, scientist and researcher as our very first guest on relax. Its just cannabis, the esteemed and brilliant Dr. Daniele Piomelli. Let me just give you a little bit from this brilliant mans background.
Now Dr. Piomelli studied pharmacology and neuroscience with James H. Schwartz and Eric Kandel at Columbia University from 1983 to 1988. And also with Paul Greengard at the Rockefeller University from 1988 to 1990. In 2000 two of his mentors, Kandel and Greengard were awarded the Nobel Prize for their contributions to physiology and medicine. After working at the Inserm in Paris, France and at the Neurosciences Institute in San Diego with Nobel laureate Gerald Edelman, Dr. Piomelli joined the University of California Irvine where he is now the Louise Turner Arnold chair of neurosciences and distinguished professor of anatomy, neurobiology, pharmacology, and Biological Chemistry. What in the world is going on? Look at the big brain on Dr. Piomelli. What have I been doing with my life. Goodness. Dr. Piomelli is an author of over 400 peer reviewed articles in journals such as Nature, Science, Nature medicine, PNAS and Nature Neuroscience, and he's also the author of three full length books and 34 patents. He founded the Department of drug discovery and development (D3), at the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa, Italy, which he directed from 2007 to 2016. He's also responsible for three biopharmaceutical startups based on discoveries made in his lab. Dr. Piomelli is the director of the UCI Center for the Study of cannabis. And Editor in Chief of Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, the first peer reviewed journal entirely dedicated to the study of cannabis, its derivatives and their endogenous counterparts in the human body. My goodness. That's how we do here on relax. Its just cannabis. These are the kinds of guests we bring you on Relax, its just cannabis is our very first guest. My goodness, man. Listen, check this interview out.
How are you today? Dr. Piomelle?
Dr. Piomelli
I'm very well. Thank you for the very nice introduction, Larry.
Big Larry
Well, thank you so much for joining us and taking time out of what must be an insane schedule at this point. How’re you doing with all the craziness we're dealing with in the world today?
Dr. Piomelli
I’m coping Larry. I’m coping. But you've got me actually on a day off. I’m taking a couple of days with my daughter. So I'm here in Miami chilling today. I'm really glad to take some questions from you. Hopefully I’ll be able to answer them.
Big Larry
I'm sure you will. Um, well. Thanks again, Dr. Dr. Piomelli for your time.the first question I want to ask you which is pretty obvious question that I think most of my audience are most concerned about… Is cannabis safe?
Dr. Piomelli
Well that’s a very difficult question the way you put it, because it seems like a simple thing. Right? It really isn't. Because we all are different. We all have differences biologies, we all have different pathology Semarang our sub problems, others don't send it more, some outsource the work. Right.
So it was really, it is really hard to give a blanket answer to this. Right. And I think we need to articulate the question a little more. So we need to say, Okay, how safe is cannabis compared to something else I would do if cannabis we're not around. You see what I'm saying?
Big Larry
I do. And I think I know where you're heading with that like in comparison to like other drugs or things like alcohol, or the vicious opioid situation that we're dealing with right now in the world. Now, I happen to know, well, at least I believe I mean, you're the expert. But you know, from all my experiences in using cannabis and the people I know that have used cannabis and some people that have had really bad experiences with opioids, I know for a fact that cannabis has to be safer than opioids. Yes.
Dr. Piomelli
Oh, that I think it's a slam dunk. Certainly. It's also I think, all you know, safer than certain types of alcohol, certain types of ways of using alcohol, it is certainly safer than other legal substances like tobacco, which now everybody loves to hate. And for a long time, as you know, in this country was the leading sources of lung cancer and still remains a pretty serious problem, So if you compare this to other things that people would do, cannabis comes out fairly well. Right. We also you need to articulate the question in a slightly different way. For example, is it safe? Or is it safe for children? You could say for teenagers, is it safe for mothers who are expecting moms, is it safe for people above 65. So this is the way I think I can answer it a little bit more judiciously. But I think the way you asked the question was probably directed to your public, I do not know your public,. but if your public is adults.
Big Larry
Well, we're definitely are. The podcast is catered to mature cannabis enthusiast people 50. And over is really my market and the people that I'm looking to inform about cannabis.
Dr. Piomelli
Yeah, well, then an educated the rational use of cannabis, I believe, it's certainly safer than anything else that is out there. If you have to use a substance, which not everyone feels like they need to use. But if you are in that group, or population who feels for example, that you come back a night, after a long day of work, you're stressed out really, to cut the edge off. I certainly think that cannabis is safer than, say, a couple of shots of whiskey or a you know, some other drink like that. But if we, if we were asking whether for example, your teenage kids can safely use it? My answer is no, you should be careful about that. Because in teenage years, there are a lot of things that are happening in the brain of kids, you know, they Brain is maturing, I don't know if this is broadly known to your public, but we have our own cannabis, you know, our brain makes our own cannabis. That's not the same cannabis, of course, is not the same molecules. They're very different in chemical structure, but they are similar in the way they work. And these compounds are really important in development, they are really important, especially in brain development. In, in young people, in the teenage years, something they are about 23 or 24 When you becoming a young adult, at that point, you become less sensitive to, to to us accountable. Teenagers, I would be really, really careful. I'm not saying you know, tell your kids that if you smoke pot, they're going to go crazy because there will be nothing wrong and will lead to the opposite result of actually having them not trusting you and then use maybe because of that lack of trust. My my view would be just like they told my daughter when she was in that period of her life. They said look, if you have to, If you have to, if you feel like you have to try because you want to try it, just be careful and don't do it often do it maybe once a week or something like that, if you if it makes you feel better, but just don't go into a daily use. And most importantly, don't go into multiple daily use. Because in that time, as I said before, and that time of your life that is problematic, and never time where it could be problematic. I'm sorry, I just finished this thought, another time is an expecting mother. And you know, we do not know if it's a really dangerous, but my view on this being during the father of a young woman, I, I feel that I would recommend her not to use it, she was it she decided to become pregnant, because we don't really know the impact it has on the fetus. There are bunch of papers out there. So there is a lot of confusion. The fact of the matter is that we do not really know. That is the fact. And in the absence of knowledge, I would take the road of being careful.
Big Larry
Being careful. Yes. Well, that makes absolute sense. And, you know, just from a personal experience. Dr. Piomelli I've used cannabis regularly since hmm, I want to say since 10th grade, which I don't know if that's something I'm proud of it. But I think it's it helped me to cope with a highly traumatic environment. And it again, like the last for the last five years or so I think I've definitely have used cannabis daily in small amounts, I would say it maybe might equate to micro dosing compared to
what some people's cannabis use is.. For instance, if I rolled a joint I mean that joint will last me all day long. And I might finish that joint by the time I get around to after dinner, which is around nine o'clock. So I think some, especially some of the people that I think will listen to this podcast would definitely say that's micro dosing. So… I don't think I've gone crazy. I think the I think the traumatic environment would have driven me crazy without the use of cannabis. But that's just me.
Dr. Piomelli
No, I think what you're saying I hear a lot in what you're saying makes a lot of sense to me. You know, I think we don't live in a world of absolutes. We live in a world that’s imperfect. We don’t live in a world where the world around you is wonderful. And then you decided one day to wake up and say, You know what? I'm gonna get stoned. People are not like that we're not that kind of animal. You know that we usually have reasons why we do things like that. And I totally understand that you lived in a traumatic and stressful environment. And you need to cut the edge off. And when you use it the way you're describing it to me, I would honestly not be particularly concerned about you, by the way, you don't sound crazy. You don't sound crazy at all. Although I’ve never met you.
one has to be careful with any decision in one way. It's not just about cannabis, about anything.
you know, life is full of problems I took, you know, like in everything else when needs to go there with open eyes. Like Okay, I'm doing this, I am monitoring myself, I know that I can live with this without having bad consequences on myself, or my loved ones. On my on my living, you know, and as long as you keep a mature outlook and your eyes open on it, Larry, I think you know, in and you talk about it openly, occasionally you can talk about it to your, to your physician, if something comes up some problems in your health, for example. And you know, you you know, in those close, close doors of your physician's office, you can say, you know, Doctor, I've been using cannabis and see what she or he says, After that, you know, the sad thing, Larry, is unfortunately, our physicians are not very knowledgeable about cannabis. It's not their fault. It's the fault I think of a system that has made the study of cannabis so complicated, but i will still open the I will keep open that door of communication and again, you have to interpret it, you know, with the with the mind of a mature person, not with the mind of a slave of whatever, you know, people tell you, right, you know, he's a doctor or she's a doctor, not a God. So you need to interpret that, you know, with your own brain, but keep the line of communication open because there are some risks, you know, especially if you are above the age of 55. We don't really know how physiology reacts to excessive use, we do not know, for example, how it impacts it could impact cardiovascular problems. So these are all things that we all have to be all have to be careful about. And being careful is not a bad thing. It’s a good thing.
Big Larry
It's not a bad thing at all. Plus, you know that old golden rule everything in moderation. Well, I'll tell you interesting story. I'll tell you, I'll tell you an interesting story. And what initially made me decide that cannabis was for me as a young, as a young adolescents. And growing up and experimenting with alcohol and cannabis, which were the two main psychoactive substances in my environment. I noticed that my group of friends who drank alcohol, I had two groups of friends, one group that drank alcohol, and one group that smoked cannabis, I noticed that when I was hanging out with the group that drank alcohol, it always ended in some kind of conflict of violence or trauma. But when I hung out with the friends that smoked cannabis, it was just always fun and laughs In good times. And it was a no brainer to me, I'm like, if you drink is going to somebody's gonna end up getting in a fight. If you smoke, you might get hungry and laugh a lot.
Dr. Piomelli
And by the way, you know, the cops know this so very well, they know that they have to break in a party, when there is a lot of alcohol, they always end up having problems, some cannabis going on, they know that those problems are not there. I hear you Larry. I absolutely hear you. But it is my duty to tell you one thing that you might have been one of the lucky ones. Because the fact is that, again, during adolescence there is so much going on in your brain. And this is something that people don't appreciate. But our brain stops growing when we are not 25. This is mind blowing to me. The reason why its so mind blowing is because as a species, you know, for hundreds of thousands of years, we used to die around thirty five or fourty.. So most of our lives back when were basically with a brain that was still developing. And now we have you know, things have changed. So we now have longer lives, etc, etc. But those crucial years, until you're 25 are still there. And you know, I think that you have to give allowance to the fact that we all are different. Some, some young people can take it, some others cannot take it. And you know, I think it's a decision that is hard to make when you're at that age. It's like when you're talking to adults, like your audience, you have to use one type of language, when you're talking to other lessons is a different type of language. And by that I don't mean telling them something that is wrong. They think you have to tell them the truth. But It's not the same message. The message for adolescence is be careful. You heard what I said, I didn't say don't use don't even experiment because I will be pointless. Who is going to take make a teenager do what you want, right? I don't know do you have kids Larry?
Big Larry
No, I don't.
Dr, Piomelli
Well, I told you I have a 26 year old daughter, who is now a young woman, of course, you know, very successful professional. She, as a teenager, she was curious about this. And so my message to her is, is was exactly what I told you . Which is be careful, because it can affect your brain. And now, luckily, she was just one of the lucky ones, my family, stable family, decent, decent income, no, not too much stress beyond the stress of being a teenager, which is for say an extremely stressful situation. But the beyond that it was a normal situation, but other people have different life stories. So I think we need always to factor in. That's why it's always very hard, Larry, to give a blanket answer to this very important questions that you starting to answer.
Big Larry
Well, I like the way you handle the doctor Piomelli. I really liked the way you answered that question that that settles it for me. because with all things you need to be careful, there's nothing you just approach with reckless abandon. You should always do things in a responsible way and especially when things are new. Moderation is the key. But let me ask you a question, Dr. Piomelli. You seem like a brilliant scientist. What was it that drew you to research cannabis?
Dr. Piomelli
Well, it was not. It was not actually so much cannabis itself. A lot of my colleagues at the time.
People I knew, were interested because what cannabis does to the brain. So my interest in it was a bit different. I will tell you the honest truth. I could not use it. I could not use cannabis because I grew up in Italy. And all cannabis use, which my friends did was taking hashish, which is sort of a, it contains high levels of THC, and putting it together with tobacco .
Big Larry
Wow. That's like super, hash is like super cannabis.
Dr. Piomelli
Well, I'll tell you, I have an aversion to tobacco, I cannot tolerate tobacco, I cannot smoke it, I cannot even be in a room with someone who smokes it. And so I never really used it, I never really use it, I saw my friends and they just said, you know, they seemed like having a lot of fun, I was a little jealous. But I couldn't, because you know, tobacco would have made me vomit instantly, So, but what happened is that when I was in my late 20s, quite a while back, but when I was in my late 20s, I was studying, getting my PhD, after my actually my postdoc, I was studying with a young faculty in Paris, France. And I was working on this class of molecules that the brain makes that are that come from the membrane, which are of the cells which are all packed like in nature studies compounds and I was pretty happy about that. And then the secret came out. Saying that cannabisis we our brain makes an endogenous cannabinoid which means the brain produced the kind of like molecule which was called anoandamyde, which is the chemical structure of this particular compound. And the chemical structure of this compound, Larry was very similar to the chemical structure of the compounds that I was working on. So this is a very nerdy, very imperative reason to become interested in cannabinoids. Because of that, I started working on the mechanism through which is, compounds are made and destroyed in the brain. And little by little started the field of endocannabinoid research because endocannabinoid is the name scientists give to this to the brain's own cannabis like molecules. endocannabinoids is an endogenous cannabinoids. And that led me, within a few years, to study the pharmacology of cannabis proper. And now, more recently, the effect the effects of all these different compounds on adolescents, et cetera, et cetera. So it was a little bit of a nerdy not quite usual path.
Big Larry
Well, I like nerdy. I like nerdy Dr. Piomelli. That's a good thing.
Dr. Piomelli
I’m glad you do Because unfortunately, that's what I am. Anyway, so that's the story. So that's how I got and that's how I got involved. So if you're, if your audience is curious, and they think that I'm somehow kind of a prude. Well, let them know that I actually have tested successfully, cannabis several times. And the reason why is because I felt that I could not be possibly studying the compound without any personal knowledge of it, I felt it was my ethical obligation and duty. To find out, I say that jokingly, but
Am serious Larry, about it. I am. And then glad I did. Because, I’ll tell you, I don't think that scientists sometimes they tend to be a little bit kind of prudish on these matters. But I think the fact is that if you really want to understand sometimes you need to have a personal perspective. And I felt that it was important for me to have that personal perspective. So I approached it in my usual nerdy way, but I thought it was a very important learning experience for me.
Big Larry
How was your experience?
Dr. Piomelli
It was actually, you know, it wasn't just one. Because you know, if you do it only once, you know, you probably, you don't get it. So on separate occasions, like I did it very seriously, and it was interesting so far. Well, first of all, the thing that strikes me the most was that it didn't fit with what
the literature was saying, in the sense that the major effects that I experienced were
related to my sensory sensory experience.
Big Larry
Let me ask you, Dr. Piomele did you smoke o Ddd you eat it? How did you consume it?
Dr. Piomelli
No, I did have to smoke it. But it was not it was not with tobacco otherwise, it would have been impossible for me, as I said. And you know what I found out that really, it really, really interesting. This was like thirty Years ago, I was just starting working on there. And what I realized is that the things that he did, were really quite unique because you have this enhancement, this almost exaggeration of your sensory experiences, you have the sense that the food tastes better. music sounds better.
Big Larry
Sex is better. Dr. Piomelli Did you? Did you get high and have a little lover? Did you do your thing? Or no?
Dr. Piomelli
I don't know what your talking about Larry. Unfortunately Im not providing this information.
But I’ll tell you I thought it was Very, very interesting. Listen, you’ve got to understand. If you’re a scientist you think that the brain is fascinating, right? When you see something so simple, changing the whole functioning of the brain in a way that is really unexpected. You get, you get, you get stuck, you get you really, and that's why what got me, it really got me addicted to studying this, because, you know, I felt that there was a real story. And you know, with time actually to say if I find out that my intuition was correct, because the way and again, I want to talk about his brains own cannabis. It is so interesting what he does so many interesting things, not just in the brain, but also outside the brain in the rest of the body. And for us scientists, I have to say, cannabis has opened a window on the brain that was completely unexpected only only 20 years ago. We did not absolutely have Any idea that there was this system regulating, finely regulating all sorts of different stuff, you know, the communication from one cell to the other in appetite and pain and stress. And, you know, I'm also mentioning this because I want to back too quickly to the issue of safety. I want your listeners to appreciate that you treat a system like this with respect. So that's why that's why I always tell people don't think it's drinking like a glass of water. No, it's not. It’s a compound a substance that has effects on you, so you know, monitor them, make sure that you understand them, how they pertain to you.
Big Larry
And another thing, cannabis is so much more potent today than it was 30 years ago.
Dr. Piomelli
Yes, this is something I often hear I am a little bit I want to push back on this a little bit. And the reason for this is that… there is a risk in the fact that the cannabis you can access you can buy in a dispensary can be extremely potent. You can have 80% 90% THC in an extract, but but if you use it properly, you can control that because you don't have to take 10 puffs, you can take a small one. if your intent, it all depends on what is your intent, if your intent is to become to be stoned, no matter how weak it was, you instead of having one, joint you will three and then you will be stoned. The question is not so much how potent is the drug, but rather how much of it you are taking. And that is you are in control of that.
Big Larry
And this is why this is why for me, Dr. Piomelli, smoking is the best way. Well, it's my preferred way to consume because the dosage control is so much easier, as opposed to consuming an edible and then kind of waiting for surprise of how it's going to affect you the effects you feel from smoking cannabis almost felt immediately and you can much more easily gauge how much you need.
Piomelli
I think you're completely right on this. Larry. The a, a lot of the folks who show up, you know, at the ER for excessive use of cannabis, and there are quite a few actually, are folks that are either inexperienced. And or folks who have used edibles, Because those are the two critical things. So if you are inexperienced, and you want to try, then you have to apply exactly what I said before, Be respectful. Be careful. monitor yourself.
Big Larry
Exactly. And I think it's smoking is much easier to kind of gauge it and kind of creep up on the levels that you're trying to get to as opposed to consuming an edible and not having any idea how it's going to hit you because when it hits you, I'll tell you a story. Dr. Piomelli, Now like I told you earlier, I've been smoking cannabis since the 10th grade. Maybe about 15 years ago I was working at a Restaurant and one of my managers gave me a pot brownie. This was a this was a rather small guy, it was maybe, maybe five, five, maybe 145 pounds he gave me he gave me a brownie about three inches square. And he said to me, Have you ever eaten weed before? and I said no this will be my first time but I've been smoking since in the 20s since I was in the 10th grade, so I'm sure I can handle it. And plus, I'm twice your size. Just give me just give me the brownie. Anyway, his instructions were in the morning with a cup of coffee, cut this brownie into four pieces and have just one of the pieces. Finish your cup, your cup of coffee, wait about an hour and see how you feel Okay, so before I even got out of his presence, I had already made up my mind that okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna do half the brownie is this little dude. If he can say a quarter of a brownie, I'm gonna do half so that next day with my cup of coffee, of course I didn't follow his instructions. And I ate half the brownie. Now, coming from smoking cannabis, I was used to the effect being almost immediate. Now he said that it would be about an hour before I felt it. So I heard him but I was more used to a different experience. So maybe a half an hour later. I didn't feel anything. Some say okay, well, maybe I need to eat another piece. So I ate another quarter of the brownie. Now, like I said, Dr. Piomelli I've been using cannabis since the 10th grade in about an hour's time. I was so intoxicated. I picked up the my whole body was buzzing. I felt like I was I felt like I was standing beside myself. Dr. Piomelli. So much so that I picked up my phone and was about to dial 911.
Dr. Piomelli
Yeah, yeah, I'm not surprised at all, what you're telling me is a very common story. And is the reason why people show up in ER, Because they go to a party. They have half a brownie. It doesn't do anything, they eat the other half. And then all of a sudden, they are heading home maybe like you know two hours later. You know, But here's the thing. Absorbtion is very variable. If you eat if you're if you had a nice, fatty meal, then the absorption is fairly quick. if you had that little to eat, it takes longer to absorb, And The other thing is eating a brownie or eating just an edible, which actually, by the way is not that bad if you do it in the proper way. the problem is that it goes through your liver. And that's the first place where anything we eat goes through the liver, the liver is there to make sure that we don't eat bad stuff. So one thing that it does is it changes chemically changes chemicals, so that they are more easily eliminated by the body, right. So that's one of the functions of the liver. And this is called metabolism. So the when THC which is as you well know, the active principle in cannabis gets to the liver, it becomes something else. It's called 11 hydroxy THC. And then it's actually more potent than THC. So if you.
Big Larry
So wait a minute. So wait a minute Dr. Piomelli. ..so if you if you if you consume cannabis as an edible, it has a different effect on you physiologically than it does if you smoke it?
Dr. Piomelli
Yeah, yeah, it definitely does. Because there's a lot more of this 11 hydroxy THC in your blood. And these 11 hydroxy THC is not equivalent to THC its more potent than THC. It may be more effective at certain things that THC does. And, and as a result of the type of experience that you have can be very, very different. If you're if you take it as an edible than the type of experience you're used to. If you're used to take it as, say, through vaping, or smoking that way or pretty much equivalent. You don't the substance goes into the lungs, and from the lungs, it gets come directly into the brain. So there is some 11 hydroxy THC that gets produced, but not as abundantly. And here is another fact that is fascinating. You probably know that women and men don't respond the same to cannabis.
Big Larry
I didn't know that.
Dr. Piomelli
Well, you know, not not all women like cannabis as much as men do. And one of the reasons is because they sometimes they they don't have a good reaction to cannabis. And so here's the thing, women tend to make a lot more 11 hydroxy THC than men do. And this has been now demonstrated in many, many different studies in many different ways. And I'm not saying that this is the only reason why men and women differ in there response to cannabis. but it is certainly one reason. And again, you know, it tells you how interesting and how complex this substance is.
Big Larry
Oh, my goodness. It is. It's just truly amazing to me. It's about time. So let me ask you this question. Dr. Piomelli if it wasn't for that marijuana tax act back in the 1930s, we would obviously be a lot further in our understanding of cannabis, especially as a medicinal property.
Dr. Piomelli
Oh, yeah. Oh, that goes without saying, Larry, I think there was. I think It was a very bad moment in the history of this country, that 1937 marihuana Tax Act. And sometimes people fail to appreciate one thing that there was really no medical reason for that piece of legislation.
Let me give you the background at the time, cannabis was used medicinally and was sold in stores. It was sold in pharmacies, and typically as a tincture. So basically, you would be an edible in a sense, yeah, you would use the tincture in water or something else and drink it like in tea and drink it. And it was, you know, used for pain for, you know, for spasms, a few other things like that. Now, was it very effective? No, it was not, it was not very effective. But it was it was used and tolerated.
1937 comes and, you know, alcohol had been prohibited for a long time, then. the prohibition stopped in the 1930s. And so there was this big bureaucracy, this big state bureaucracy that was had been put in place into place to control alcohol, and had to find some, some occupation and the way the solution that the federal government at the time decided to use was to actually direct it toward this cannabis, which they didn't call cannabis by the way they called marijuana they used the Mexican term. Because it was basically it was basically racist and there was a very strong racist component there. not just against Mexicans but also against African Americans. Not that that's something that we should be surprised about. Yeah, but if you read anything from those years, it is shocking. Its mind blowing. How the messaging was so ostensibly false.
Big Larry
Oh, my God, it was just propaganda is my question. My thing has always been I mean, it's just ridiculous for them. A little bit of research I've done into cannabis. I know that at some point, back in, back in the day with with with mankind, and civilization, cannabis has always been there. So my thing is like, how is it in 1937, the American government decided that cannabis is no longer legal, and then the propaganda campaign and they went into to prove that or at least try to convince the public, the public who has been using cannabis all along, I did some research into how popular cannabis was. And when in the revolutionary days back in the history of America, they mandated that every household in the colony grow 100 plants of cannabis, they use cannabis as as you could you could repay your loans with cannabis because back then hemp was such an important commodity in the world.
Dr. Piomelli
So let me, if you don't mind just push back a little bit on this because I don't want you or your listeners to be a little bit confused on this. So the type of hemp that was used in the American colonies was the same hemp that people in Europe used for many, many years. I grew up I grew up you know smelling the smell of hemp because hemp was used to make fabric. That hemp, Larry's did not contain a whole lot of THC. If you look into if you look into the into the literature, it will say Yeah, well if you're if you walk in it in a field of cannabis hemp, you you can get a headache, you know, worker you can get a headache but it wasn't really and then these actually, Larry this is one of the reasons why we have a problem today because cannabis was not ever used in Europe, or in the American colonies.
eally as a as a substitute for alcohol, it was used in North Africa as a substitute for alcohol it was used in Mexico is a substitute for alcohol. And I think we can say now is a safer substitute for alcohol. But it wasn't used for its intoxicating properties. So when, when this in the 19, late 1930s, this campaign started, and there were many economic reasons. Also behind that, and not a historian so I don't want to go there. But there were many reasons for that. When it started, it was in a sense, easy because the American public, European public, they dont know what this thing was. And all they had to do is to say, look, you know, black folks, Mexicans say, you know, they use it and they become violent,
Big Larry
Its evil, and they rape our women.
Dr. Piomelli
Exactly. They rape our women was actually not, it was not even it was not even something they would say like, you know, we didn't know it was actually in if you look at this and anything 1936 movie called ... Its called called something. It called…
Big Larry
You’re talking about Reefer madness.
Dr. Piomelli
Reefer Madness thank you so much. If you look at the if you look at the ad, beside, you know, basically makes women have sex with, with other men and men of other races. Quote un quote, and, you know, makes men violent. And this movie is, is atrocious. Of course, it's just a piece of propaganda. My point is, there was no medical reason behind the marijuana tax act of 1937. And that is what really annoys me, it annoys me, because if there's been a medical reason, albeit maybe a wrong one, we could, you know, we there would be, there would be some sense to it. But now 70, almost 80 years later, we are still suffering from the consequences of this of the stigma created by the illegality of Canabis, we cannot understand either, Larry, the benefits, or the risk And this is where I keep saying, you know, when you go church, you don't understand the benefit. But you don't understand the risks either. So it is it is really a lot a lose lose scenario, I don't get it, I don't understand why it is. So it isn't such a clear thing that at least for research purposes, the federal government should most definitely remove all, all limits to the use of cannabis for research purposes, and give scientists, the people in the medical field, the time the opportunity to find out what really is going on, in and you know, meanwhile, you know, of course, you know, as I said, you know, printing the things with the, with the appropriate precautions, right. But you know, the only people really have now have a hard time at essential can to do the work. Because if you are living in California, the writer your age, you can get this very, very easily, very easy, except if you're a scientist, because then you know, you have to jump through all sorts of hoops.
Big Larry
You're kidding me, so scientific research of cannabis hasn't been freed up, even though it's legal medicinally and recreationally. They still make it difficult for scientists to research it?
Dr. Piomelli
Well, don’t forget. it is still llegal under federal law and federal law in most cases trumps state law. at every level. The federal government sometimes makes the conscious decision not to intervene state affairs, however, it is it is the law of the country that federal law preempts state law. So in theory, any administration, including administration's you would not expect, can raid a cannabis dispensary. There's only one in California or in Colorado or anywhere else where it's illegal. There are plenty of states where it's legal, right. I think 18 I remember the exact number. But anyway, the point being that the the changes every time, but the point being is that the federal don't do it because there is a there is a something in the budget that gets that gets renewed, it's been renewed, but it's about to expire, whereby the federal the, the FBI cannot use resources to to go again,st so to speak.
State safe law, right when it comes to cannabis. So if you're in Alabama, they can do it but they cannot do it in California, they cannot use the money so so that's that's sort of that sort of
Big Larry
Do you see that changing Dr. Piomelli?
Do you see us getting to a place where the federal government will loosen the restrictions on cannabis so that so that a medical researchers like yourself can have the freedom to discover the things about cannabis that we need to know?
Dr. Piomelli
unfortunately, that is I don't know what the federal government will do in the next year, I know that everything they are doing is very made complicated by number of a number of things. What I do know is that it would be a very bipartisan position to change the laws, because in both parties, components of both parties, not everyone in both parties, but components of each of the two parties. For different reasons, Want the same. And I happen to think that that would be the only rational movement forward is to lower the barrier for research and make it easier for for medical scientists to study cannabis. And I know that there are bills that are being considered currently, as some of them are better than others. But the issue is that… am I optimistic? Moderately because there's so much, there's so much so much doubt being that has been raised on on this, that I don't think unfortunately, that the our legislators in lawmakers in in in DC can see through it. Well, I can tell you that.
Every time I've been there speaking to the lawmakers about this, or to their staffers, and that happened a few times in the past. They lent you an ear, but they do they're not very well prepared to to understand the science to understand the problems and sometimes instead of saying okay, let me spend you know, a day working on this.To look into it, they rather take you know, a political shortcut and say, okay, you know, this is more, the more expedient and we're gonna do this, this instead of doing the right thing.
Big Larry
And then of course, they have their interest and they have the interest that they're that they're trying to protect. But it just, it just amazes me that the government can be so hard core against cannabis knowing that all the negative connotations about cannabis cannabis were based on a propaganda and lies but yet and still today, they still hold fast to those attitudes and keeping trying to keep cannabis illegal. It's just it's just beyond the pale for me, you know, it is beyond frustrating. But thank God for me. I live in the state of California where its legally medicinal and recreationally. But it's a damn shame that doctors and brilliant scientists like you, you know, have to go through so many changes just to research something that's been a part of the human experience since the beginning.
Dr. Piomelli
Yeah, it is. It is. It is sad. And and If you were to visit my lab, I'll show you the safe. The steel safe. Inside the locked freezer, inside the locked room, inside the locked building, where I keep the few milligrams of pure THC that we use, when I could walk five minutes to a dispensary and take it 1000 times more and bring it home. And there is no rhyme or reason for that. One thing that makes me and everyone else like similarly minded people really infuriated, because then you have to kind of come to the conclusion that they don't want us to do it. He's not just that ,OK its just ineptitude its incompetence. There's a lot of that, but it looks like people don't someone does not want us to.
Big Larry
Exactly. And that's what I feel it is it's like the it's like there's some powerful entity that has lobbyists powerful enough to keep these lawmakers from doing something that has all that makes this makes perfect sense. I mean, it's just ridiculous. But with cannabis prohibition has done to American culture, especially the culture in the families and communities of African Americans and Hispanic people. It is absolutely ridiculous. But that government thing is just a rabbit hole. Dr. Piomelli and we can talk about that for hours but let me transition a bit and ask you about one of the most popular components of cannabis CBD now, There are people who who believe and bought the propaganda about cannabis hook line and sinker and still frown upon cannabis but they will go and get some CBD and use it profusely. There seems to be a school of thought that most of the CBD on the market these days is not even effective at treating it as a tincture or whatever they're using it for what is the what are the things we should look for to be sure that the CBD we might purchase or use is actually effective and is actually has some kind of effect on us physiologically?
Dr. Piomelli
So, Larry that’s a tough question because he was such a brouhaha on CBD, so much of it.
And like a lot, I get that question a lot to the to putting things in perspective, CBD is now an approved drug in the United States, under the name of Epidiolex. It's used for certain forms of epilepsy, childhood epilepsy is in which is moderately effective, it is moderately effective, it has also side effects. And the main side effects it has are related to the fact that just like THC, as I was mentioned mentioning before, CBD goes into the liver, and is metabolized by the liver is converted by liver in other compounds, that that fatigues the liver tires to read liver out down. And as a result, the liver starts to release some enzymes and things because the cells are damaged. So CBD is not free of problems, if you use it at the high doses that are required to for the the anti epileptic effects. So those are the ones that are for which have just been approved in children with certain forms of genetic epilepsy, the risk of a side effect is pretty is pretty is pretty high. In fact, it was in those trials, the trial was very high. Now there are other potential medical uses for for CBD, for example, there are studies that have suggested an effect on anxiety, they're starting to get suggested any effect on psychosis, which is what happens in folks who suffer from schizophrenia, they have this hallucination's they have paranoia. And there are some studies indicating the CBD might be effective and under those conditions. So when I say study, please, what I mean is not definitive studies, not conclusive studies. There are good studies out there but they are not conclusive yet. So anxiety, psychosis, and epilepsy. These are three conditions with epilepsy being approved, the only one that is approved three conditions in which CBD might be effective, but it would be effective only if used at very high doses. And what I mean by very high is almost a milligram a day. Sorry, one gram a day I'm sorry, I misspoke as in one gram a day, one gram a day is
we are talking about a very, very, very large amount. Its extremely expensive also. So you will never find if you go online or you go to the dispensary, you will never find a tincture of CBD or an edible of CBD that contains you know that level, that level of dosing, you will need to probably use an entire bottle to get to one gram, maybe one bottle contains one gram or two grams, but not much more than that. So there is that. And so as you said before, correctly, if people use it for anxiety, for example, which is a lot of people I know no do, they will have to increase the dosing so much that they will incur more likely than not would incur in issues of liver potential issues of liver toxicity. But this is this is something that before we get the final word is not said yet the studies to show this not been done. So take this what I just said with a grain of salt, but one thing is for sure, if you take just a few milligrams, 20, 30, 40, 50 milligrams, which is what most people end up taking, you don't have, you're not going to have any effect that is any of the effects that are touted in the in the literature in the scientific literature.
Big Larry
Now what about what about people that are using CBD as a topical like for like for muscle pain or soreness and stuff like that? Is it effective in that way?
Dr. Piomelli
So there's no studies showing that for sure. But that's at least the safer route of administration. Because if you give it locally, CBD won't get absorbed very, very quickly at all, you will eventually get inside, but it will mostly stay at the sight of application. And there is decent evidence that have anti-inflammatory properties. I think that studies in this direction aren't being currently Performed or being as being done. I, I'm pretty optimistic that in the next maybe two to three years, we will have a final word on some of these things. And, you know, I, I am skeptical. That's my job. But I'm also optimistic that some of this will pan out, I certainly hope that some of this will pan out because if they work, if CBD works for something relieving pain, oh my god, do we don't we need better? Of course we do. So I think that is that is something that will be amazing. Now I'm not, I'm not losing my sleep over it, because I don't think that it's going to be a game changer. But if it helps, you know, if it's an incremental improvement, it's still going to be still going to be useful. And when you apply topically, it's a lot, certainly a lot safer. One thing that you need to consider this is not so much for the topical aspect, but for, if you take it, if you take it orally is that you have to trust what's in the label. If the label says it's 100%, CBD, you have to trust the labels but for its for its work, right. But you don't know that for sure. Because unfortunately, the FDA has very little ability to maybe political willingness, I don't know but surely they don't have the resources to, to enforce to monitor all these various makers, you know, producers, right, so if you prepare CBD, from hemp, for example, there is very small amount of there's going to be a small amount of THC, which of course you know will end up entering your system. There is also not just delta nine THC but if you're using hemp, there might be delta eight THC, that will also enter your system. So now here, here is the problem is that if you if you take a drug test and use think, you're taking CBD, well guess what, you know, you're also taking some THC, And even f it does not affect you, if you have no psychological effect. It may show up in drug test. So I mean, there are all sorts of different risks and different problems that are associated with these CBD craze. And, you know, I'm not a hype person, I really don't like pipes. Just whenever something is hyped, I immediately become skeptical.
Big Larry
Me too Dr. Piomelli. Me too.
Dr. Piomelli
So we have you know, I'm happy the CBD is being studied, right. But I think you know, we know that THC works for pain in adults, let's do some studies on THC as well. Its So difficult. They make it almost impossible.
Big Larry
That's very intriguing. Well, I'll tell you this… My girlfriend who frowns on the use of cannabis swears by CBD, she's a professional athlete, and she swears by CBD. And she rubs she uses it topically on our muscles. And she swears by it. She and she not only swears by it, she recommends it to a lot of the people she works with.
Dr. Piomelli
Not surprised because as I said you know, CBD has some anti-inflammatory properties. Anything works for her. I mean, there is the possibility that if we run a big trial with you know, 200 people, and it's placebo controlled and is a properly randomized facility, it will show up and she was right. The fact that it works for her doesn't mean that it's necessarily a placebo effect could be that actually works for her. So I got no problem with that. And you know, as an athlete, the only thing that she has to be careful about if that's some THC gets into her system. And for some reason if she has, she has to take an anti doping test. It may show up and then she could be in trouble because they said Olympic athletes that had exactly the problem as long ago. It's really it's really a risk. So it would be so much better if we had an FDA given the appropriate resources to control the production and the sale of these products, you know, taking samples and making sure that there is THC only in amounts in such low amounts that they cannot affect this type of testing. Otherwise, folks like you’re girlfriend might end up in trouble.
Big Larry
Well, thank God she doesn't have to deal with any of the anti doping laws. She's a she. She teaches tennis so thank God she's So she doesnt have to worry about any of that stuff. But she swears by it. She she recommends it to a lot of her clients and they swear by it too. And I think it's the funniest thing because like I said, I've been smoking cannabis all along, and we've been in a relationship for a pretty long time. And she's always frowned upon it. And then and so I just think it's amusing that now when I go to the dispensary, she says, can you see if they have some of the Papas and Barkley oil I like
Dr. Piomelli
So funny, it is kind of funny,
Big Larry
Just like when I go to parties and you know, where are you going, Larry, say, I'm going outside to smoke a joint Oh, you're gonna go smoke a joint pothead. And then at the end of the night, they're all out and done drunk and stupid. And then, you know, it's just funny to me the differences in people's attitudes, again, driven by that intense campaign of propaganda against cannabis. But anyway, Dr. Piomelli I have one last question for you. And this is just a personal question and something that a personal question of mine something that I'm interested in? I know sativa and indica. What is ruderalis?
Dr. Piomelli
Oh, my God, you like tough questions, Listen Im not a botanist so take So what I'm about to say, take it with a grain of salt. So the the fact is, and I'm gonna, I'm gonna say this, the fact is that we as humans have used cannabis for a very, very long time, either as hemp or something else or as rope or whatever. Right? So when we use plants, we make them the way we want them to be. Right? So we make and we change them we create cultivars, certain varieties. Yes, it has certain properties and not others. Right. Right. So identifying original species of cannabis such as those who just mentioned sativa, indica, ruderalis, these are the three main species they were first characterized when, when scientists looked at the plant in different parts of the world, right? When you try and do this is extremely difficult. So one thing that we one tool that we have, that we didn't use to have is genetic, Before, we used to look at the plant, and we said, oh, look, it's got a long stock, and it's got, you know, Leaves that look like this or flowers that look like this is gonna be sativa, or if its got this other properties is going to be indica, or these other properties gonna be ruderalis, right. But these are only external features. It's not what the plant is because those external features could depend on the environment it grows in the nutrients, the amount of water, the temperature, all these different factors, right. So the genetics on the other hand, doesn’t lie because the genetics is the complement of genes. So the compliment of instructions to make the live plant, right, and when you go and look at the genetics, and unless things have changed in the last year or so, the last time I looked into this, there is really it's almost impossible to distinguish between sativa indica ruderalis. Basically impossible and the reason for that is because we have messed with this plant so much, that they are basically one large set of varieties that have a similar genetic composition with some small differences. So that certain terpenes are more in place certain other terpenes in another there's more CBD there is more THC, all these things are the result of a human selection. So the question unfortunately you're asking my answer is that there is no probably such these probably only one species of cannabis with probably 1000s of varieties 1000s of varieties, not just two or three .
Big Larry
Yes. Because I’ve even noticed that in the short time that cannabis has been legal here in California and my experiences and dispensaries when when I first started to go, you know, I would I would distinguish that whether or not I wanted indica or sativa but then one of the one of the bud tenders educated me and tell me so you know actually, most cannabis almost all cannabis is hybrid now it's a little bit of both.
Dr. Piomelli
Yeah, yeah, yeah. They use they use both. It’s kind of a little bit of a marketing ploy if I can say that. They use Indica for certain things and sativa for certain things or other thing, right? So they use it for is a shorthand to say, if you want to achieve this particular purpose use this one if your issue that purpose is that one. Now, I'm not saying that there is no basis for this, what I'm saying is that if there is a basis has not been shown yet, okay? Because, you know, Cannabis is cannabis is cannabis. Now, obviously, there are differences in the amount of terpenes the differences in the level of THC, other cannabinoid metabolites can be different. So all these things can play a role, right? But what drives, Larry, what drives the pharmacology of cannabis, the way we started this conversation when so the, the cannabis that makes you high, really the cannabis that makes you thigh that gives those expected effects. Then those are driven by THC. If you remove THC, cannabis would be oregano. I mean, honestly, have you ever had freshly cut real oregano?
Big Larry
Probably not. Just the trash they sell you in the supermarket?
Dr. Piomelli
Oh, that’s terrible. But if you buy the real thing. You know, and you and you and you put in a bag it smells like pot. So I mean, you know, I think it would be an interesting it would be an interesting pharmacological machine. Cannabis is just an amazing little
sort of chemical industry if you like, but the fact is, that THC is the reason why its hated by many loved by many and illegal unfortunately,
Big Larry
I find that most interesting because before this conversation with you, when I thought about CBD, I thought I thought more medicinal compounds and when I thought THC, I thought more psychoactive compounds but it sounds like what you're saying is that we're starting to realize that THC also has some medicinal compounds.
Dr. Piomelli
Oh no, absolutely no mistake THC is is actually proven to be an medicinal compound, there is a drug approved that the Food and Drug Administration has been a drug for over 40 years. Since the 1980s. It a compound called Marinol, which is now there now two or three that there actually have been. And They've been used rarely in the clinic, mostly to treat nausea and nausea is one of the is one of the pharmacological effects that cannabis, or the THC in cannabis is completely and conclusively demonstrated in scientific literature. Cannabis curbs, nausea, particularly if you're taking a nasty class of drugs that block cancer, they block cancer growth or anti cancer drugs, the chemotherapy circles, these agents stop your appetite, give your nausea and there is little as effective as as actually cannabis in curbing these side effects. And so it was made into a drug in the 1980s has been approved and is used rarely and the reason why it's used rarely is because it's not because of the stigma but because of the fact that when you put THC in a pill for reasons we discussed it's an edible it does well if you inhale it because you know the metabolism the slowness, etc etc. And it is THC THC is known to be also if you look at the analgesic or anti pain effectivity of cannabis there it I don't want to I don't know irritates your girlfriend I'm sure that she's a very fine person. But THC is analgesic. You know, it is the analgesic component. We are the CBD may very well be anti-inflammatory, right but the analgesic effects of CBD are not very strong. And those in THC are probably better. And we have substantial evidence. We don't have conclusive evidence we have substantial evidence that cannabis and cannabinoids are effective in treating chronic pain in adults these are, these are established scientific facts. But unfortunately, all this gets sort of muddled in, in a conversation that is anything but clear and anything but scientific.
Big Larry
Exactly. Well, one last question. Dr. Piomelli…First of all, thank you so much for joining us. You're our first guest here on relax. Its just cannabis and a most distinguished guests you are thank you so much for taking time out of your impossibly Busy, busy schedule to take this time to talk with us. So I guess we'll finish on this note what's what are you most excited about in your research?
Dr. Piomelli
Its on two levels. First, I would like to see proven conclusively that cannabis works for pain or it doesn’t. This is something that I think needs to be done can be done, should be done. I am excited the idea that folks are trying to get it done and hopefully will happen in the next couple of years. That's one thing. The other thing is that I'm excited by our understanding of the of our own brain, our brains own cannabis because I think that can lead to also very important changes in, in, in the treatment of diseases like depression, anxiety, autism, and things like that. So I am excited both for what cannabis can offer, And also for the insights and potential pharmaceutical development. That cannabis can usher through the knowledge that is now producing.
Big Larry
Now wasn't that just awesome? Thank you once again, Dr. Piomele We fully appreciate you good sir. And keep up the good work please. Cannabis needs you. So ladies and gentlemen, that's a wrap.
